Fisheries decline, local livelihoods and conflicted governance: An Indonesian case

This study investigates the social and environmental impacts of rise decline fishing industry in an Indonesian coastal community as a case conflicted role governance marine resource management. It analyses relationship between two distinct but intersecting fisheries west Bali: traditional small-scale artisanal fishery targeting diverse near shore species for local market, large-scale commercial purse seine fleet that exploits once rich Bali Strait sardine fishery. The recent collapse has had marked impact on livelihoods fishers both sectors. A significant issue future dependent communities is need to raise priority equity sustainability governance. failure regulatory regimes control overfishing found be key factor unravelling economy presents instructive analysing wider implications fundamental conflict political global system unevenly matched market-driven use sustainable development practices. Methodologically, research combines qualitative quantitative approaches compensate dearth data available sectors respectively.
